Coordinators open the Community Engagement tab of the MYP year group (your school may call it SA or CE) to see every student's progress, switch between Outcomes and Hours, export to Excel and submit term evaluations. Advisors can follow updates in Reviews & Progress.
ManageBac+ now uses Community Engagement in place of Service as Action (SA) for MYP. Some screenshots and labels in this guide still show the old name, and year groups set up before the change may still show Service as Action or SA. The steps are the same. See Service as Action and Service Learning are now Community Engagement.
Moving existing year groups to Community Engagement: year groups already using Service as Action keep the old setup until they are migrated. Migration means matching existing learning outcomes and hours to the new Community Engagement setup, and some of this data may not carry across, so it works best at the start of an academic year, before students add new activities. Submit a request and we will help you plan the move.
Schools can rename Community Engagement. In the screenshots the school uses SA (Service as Action), so you may see SA, CE or Community Engagement in your school's menus.
Review Community Engagement progress
For coordinators: Year Groups > your MYP year group > Community Engagement
Open the Community Engagement tab of your MYP year group to see the roster. Tiles at the top count students by progress indicator (Excellent, On-track, Concern and To Be Determined), and you can search for a student or use Filter.
Use the view menu to switch between Outcomes, Hours and Alphabetically. Outcomes shows how many learning outcomes each student is targeting across their experiences, how much evidence they have submitted and how many meetings have been held.
The Details panel has the coordinator tools: Mark All Activities Approved, Reset All Progress Indicators, Bulk Create Activity, Generate Reports, Manage E-mail Reminders, Submit Term Evaluation (for example Submit Term SA Evaluation) and Export to Excel.
A student's worksheet
Select a student's name to open their Community Engagement worksheet. It lists their experiences and the hours planned for each.
The Progress section shows the learning outcomes. Tick an outcome to mark it complete for the student. Over the programme, more outcomes are completed as students finish their experiences with evidence.
Progress indicators
Advisors can set a progress indicator from the top of a student's worksheet: Excellent, On-track or Concern. To remove it, select To Be Determined.
The indicator then shows on the roster tiles, and you can filter students by it. Use Reset All Progress Indicators in the Details panel to clear them for the whole year group.
For advisors: My Workspace > Reviews & Progress
Advisors and coordinators can follow their students from Reviews & Progress, on the Community Engagement tab (Service as Action in the screenshot). It shows each year group with counts of approvals and reviews to do, and the latest activity from your students, including new experiences, notes, reflections and reviews. Use Filter to choose year groups, or Message Supervisors to contact supervisors.
Export Community Engagement to Excel
On the year group's Community Engagement tab, open the Details panel and select Export to Excel. The spreadsheet includes:
- A summary for each student: student ID, status, name, email, Community Engagement advisor and homeroom advisor
- Counts of learning outcomes, reflections and evidence, and meetings
- Planned hours for each hour type (if enabled) and total hours
Further tabs list Community Engagement projects and each student's experiences.
Assess Community Engagement
Turn on Community Engagement evaluation
Go to Settings > Programme Settings > Middle Years > Assessment > Assessment Models. Under Enable evaluation of, tick Community Engagement (or Service as Action) and save. You can then set up the rubric values (for example E, O, C) and descriptors on the matching rubric tab.
Submit term evaluations
On the year group's Community Engagement tab, open the Details panel and select Submit Term Evaluation (for example Submit Term SA Evaluation). Choose the term, then give each student a descriptor and a comment. Changes save automatically.
Progress indicators are set on each student's worksheet and carry across all terms. Descriptors and comments can be included in term reports. Comment boxes have formatting options such as headings and right-to-left text.
Show Community Engagement on report cards
Go to Insights > Reporting > Templates and choose IB Middle Years.
PDF report templates
Open a PDF template. On the Overview tab, tick Service as Action / Community Engagement and choose whether to show Hours and the Completed outcomes sentence.
Multi Curricula templates
Open a Multi Curricula template and select Add Component in a section. On the Academics tab, add the Service Learning component, which shows progress, experiences and hours. Use Customisation to choose what it shows, then save your changes.
Mark a worksheet as complete
When a student has completed Community Engagement, tick Student has completed the programme (for example Student has completed the SA Programme) in the Progress section of their worksheet. This marks all their learning outcomes as complete and locks the worksheet. To let the student keep editing, untick it.
