Quick answer

Service as Action (MYP) and Service Learning (CP and other programmes) are now called Community Engagement in ManageBac+. Year groups that already use Service as Action or Service Learning carry on as before until they are migrated, which we can help you plan.

Service as Action and Service Learning are now Community Engagement

ManageBac+ now uses the name Community Engagement for MYP Service as Action and for Service Learning in the CP and other programmes. Year groups already set up with Service as Action or Service Learning keep working as before. Moving them to Community Engagement is a migration rather than a rename.

What changed

Programme Old name New name
IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Service as Action (SA) Community Engagement
IB Career-related Programme (CP) and other programmes Service Learning (SL) Community Engagement
IB Diploma Programme (DP) Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) No change

Why the name changed

The IB's MYP updates describe Community Engagement as engagement with the community, decided together with it, rather than service done for it. ManageBac+ follows the IB's vocabulary so the platform matches what schools use in their programmes.

If your year groups use Service as Action or Service Learning

Nothing changes for these year groups unless you migrate them:

  • Existing activities, reflections, evidence, supervisor reviews and hours stay where they are.
  • Advisors, worksheets, year group settings, exports and reports work as before.
  • Menus and tabs may keep the old name, Service as Action (SA) or Service Learning (SL).

Moving to Community Engagement

Community Engagement is set up differently from Service as Action and Service Learning, so existing year groups cannot simply be switched over. Moving them is a migration that we plan with you:

  • Learning outcomes and hours recorded against existing activities have to be matched to your Community Engagement setup. Because Community Engagement can be customised, some of this data may not carry across.
  • Migration works best at the start of an academic year, before students add new activities.
  • Check which year groups you want to move and whether you need to keep a record of past activities first, for example by exporting progress to Excel or generating reports.

To start, submit a request with the programmes and year groups you would like to move, and we will look at the options with you.

📝 Note

Some screenshots in older guides still show Service as Action or Service Learning. The steps are the same for both.
