Quick answer

Community Engagement advisors and coordinators approve students' Community Engagement activities, and supervisors review them.

This guide explains how Community Engagement Advisors, Community Engagement Coordinators, and supervisors can approve Community Engagement activities and manage supervisor reviews in ManageBac+.

⚠️ Service as Action is now Community Engagement

ManageBac+ now uses Community Engagement in place of Service as Action (SA) for MYP. Some screenshots and labels in this guide still show the old name, and year groups set up before the change may still show Service as Action or SA. The steps are the same. See Service as Action and Service Learning are now Community Engagement.

Moving existing year groups to Community Engagement: year groups already using Service as Action keep the old setup until they are migrated. Migration means matching existing learning outcomes and hours to the new Community Engagement setup, and some of this data may not carry across, so it works best at the start of an academic year, before students add new activities. Submit a request and we will help you plan the move.

Community Engagement activity approvals help confirm that students can proceed with their planned activities. Community Engagement Advisors and Community Engagement Coordinators can approve activities from the Community Engagement approvals area or directly from an individual student’s Community Engagement worksheet.

Supervisor reviews allow activity supervisors to comment on a student’s progress, effort, and commitment. These reviews can be requested from ManageBac+ and added directly to the student’s Community Engagement worksheet once submitted.

Overview

Community Engagement Advisors and Community Engagement Coordinators can approve Community Engagement activities in two ways:

  • From Reviews & Progress > Community Engagement > Approvals, when assigned to students as their Community Engagement Advisor.
  • From an individual student’s Community Engagement worksheet, accessed through the relevant IB year group.

Supervisor reviews can then be requested once the required activity conditions have been met.

Key Concepts

Activity approvals

Activities requiring approval are indicated by the Needs Approval icon on the student’s Community Engagement worksheet. This icon is shown in the Legend on the right side.

The Legend helps identify activities that need approval on the student’s Community Engagement worksheet.

Supervisor reviews

Supervisor reviews allow external or in-school supervisors to comment on a student’s participation and confirm whether the activity was completed successfully.

Review availability

The Request Supervisor Review button appears only after the activity has at least one Reflection in Reflections & Evidence and the Community Engagement Advisor has marked the activity as Approved.

Warnings & Important Notes

  • When an activity is marked as Approved, the student is notified by email that the activity has been approved and that they can proceed.
  • Supervisors do not need a registered ManageBac+ account to complete the linked review survey.
  • Anyone with a valid email address can receive the supervisor review notification.
  • The Request Supervisor Review button will not appear until the activity has at least one Reflection in Reflections & Evidence and has been marked as Approved.

In Summary

  • Community Engagement Advisors and Community Engagement Coordinators can approve activities from Reviews & Progress > Community Engagement > Approvals or from a student’s Community Engagement worksheet.
  • Supervisor reviews can be requested once an activity has been approved and includes at least one Reflection.
  • In-school supervisors can track review status for multiple students from Reviews & Progress > Community Engagement > Reviews.

ManageBac+ supports Community Engagement approval and review workflows by keeping activity statuses, student notifications, and supervisor feedback connected in one place.
