Configuring and enabling Extended Essay (EE) worksheets

Quick answer

Add the Extended Essay template in Settings > IB Diploma > Project-based Learning > Pre-built Templates and customise it if needed. Then tick Extended Essay under Templates in Edit Year Group Settings, and make sure your EE subjects are enabled.

Configuring and enabling Extended Essay (EE) worksheets

Enable EE subjects

  1. Check the subject is enabled as an IB DP subject in Settings > IB Diploma > Subjects.

  2. Go to Settings > IB Diploma > Subjects > Extended Essay Subjects and enable the same subject there.

A subject that is missing from the EE template is usually not enabled in one of these two places. For more on subjects, see Configuring Programme Academic Settings (Subjects, Levels, Standards & Unit Templates).

Add the EE template

  1. Go to Settings > IB Diploma > Project-based Learning, select Pre-built Templates and Add Extended Essay Template.

  2. The template comes with the EE requirements already set up. To customise it, select the template name.

Year groups from the Class of 2027 onwards use the EE First Assessment 2027 template.

Customise the EE template

Open the template from Settings > IB Diploma > Project-based Learning. Use its tabs to change labels and add sections or assessment options.

Avoid deleting items from the pre-built EE template. They support IB Diploma requirements.

Overview

Change key details. Tick Enable Project by Default to turn the template on for every new IB Diploma year group. Tick Archive Project Template to archive a template you no longer use.

Framework

Option What it does
Proposal Requirements students complete before you approve their proposal. Each can be a text field, checkboxes, radio buttons or a dropdown menu.
Researcher's Reflection Space Where students reflect on the project and connect it to learning outcomes and units.
Self-assessment An optional space for students to organise a presentation about their project.
Reflections Student reflections and teacher comments, used later to generate the EE Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF).
Deadlines & To Dos Deadlines linked to the project, each with To Do items, shown on the student's worksheet.
Extended Essay Documents Lets students and supervisors upload and store documents on the EE worksheet.
Notes & Interviews Messages between students and teachers on the worksheet, plus interview notes visible to teachers and admins only.

Assessment

The EE assessment criteria are already built in. You can customise Project Assessment Rubrics and Term Grades Rubrics to add assessment options.

With Term Grades Rubrics set up, submit EE term grades from Year Group > Extended Essay > Details > Submit Term Evaluation.

Forms

Turn on EE RPPF generation and map the template's Planning and Progress Form fields to the sections of the IB's EE RPPF. See Planning & Progress Forms (PPF) for Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

Terminology

Rename terms so the worksheet matches the language your school uses. The hint under each field explains what the term refers to.

Use Student Progress to change or add the overall progress indicators supervisors use to evaluate students.

Turn on EE for a year group

If the template has Enable Project by Default ticked, EE is already on for new year groups. Otherwise:

  1. Open the year group and select Edit Year Group Settings (gear icon).

  2. Scroll to Templates, tick Extended Essay and select Save Changes.

Turning EE off hides the tab from the year group but keeps student data. Turn it back on at any time to restore access.

Edit EE guides and the handbook

  1. Go to Settings > IB Diploma > Guides > EE and tick the guide sections you want students to see.

  2. To upload your own handbook, go to the Handbook area and select Update. Select Save Changes.

Check a student's EE worksheet

Open the year group, select Extended Essay and select a student.

  • Proposal: the pathway, subjects, interdisciplinary framework and idea. Select Edit Proposal to change it. Extended Essay Progress lets you flag students of concern or excellence.

  • Deadlines & To-dos: add deadlines with Add New Deadline on the EE roster, then add To-dos. Personal To-Dos show here too.

  • Extended Essay Documents: review or submit EE documents for the student.

  • Notes: message the student and log interview notes. Interview notes are visible to teachers and admins only.
