Quick answer

Go to Insights > Engagement Analytics to see which students are Not Engaged, At-Risk, On-Track or Highly Engaged, based on last login, online lessons joined and task completion. Filter the list, then select students and use Send Student Reminders.

For administrators, advisors and teachers who want to spot students who need support, using their activity in ManageBac+.

Open Engagement Analytics

Go to Insights > Engagement Analytics. Choose the programme, for example IB Diploma, and the academic term. The tiles at the top count students in each engagement status, and the Students list shows each student's task completion, online lessons joined, last login and homeroom attendance.

Select a student's name to open their profile and follow up on their coursework.

Engagement statuses

Each student is placed in one of four statuses. If a student meets criteria for more than one status, they are placed in the least engaged one. For example, a student who logged in yesterday but has completed under a quarter of their tasks shows as Not Engaged.

Status Last login Online lessons joined Task completion
Not Engaged More than 2 weeks ago 25% or less 25% or less
At-Risk More than 1 week ago 50% or less 50% or less
On-Track More than 3 days ago 80% or less 80% or less
Highly Engaged Within the last 3 days More than 80% More than 80%

Select the i on a status tile to see its criteria.

How each measure is worked out
  • Last login: any active session in ManageBac+ that day. Staying signed in for 30 days or single sign-on does not affect it. See Tracking Student Activity on ManageBac+.
  • Online lessons joined: whether the student opened the online lesson link for lessons in the past this term. Only online lessons linked to a unit and started in Presentation Mode count. It does not measure time spent in the lesson.
  • Task completion: tasks the student has uploaded to, out of tasks with the dropbox turned on whose due dates have passed this term.
  • Homeroom attendance: shown for context only (for example present, absent or late). It does not change the student's status.

Sort, filter and search students

  • Sort: use the sort menu to list students Alphabetically by last name, or by advisor. Your own advisees appear first.
  • Filter: select Filter, choose Grades and Engagement statuses, then select Filter again to apply, or Cancel.
  • Search: type a name in Search by Student. Your sort and filter choices stay in place.

Send reminders to students

  1. Select Edit Student Reminder Template to review the message. Change the text if you need to, then select Save Changes. Reset to Default restores the original message.

  2. Tick the students to remind, or tick the box at the top to select everyone in the filtered list, for example all Not Engaged students.

  3. Select Send Student Reminders. The email and mobile notification are sent straight away.

Reminders come from a no-reply address, so students cannot reply to them directly.

Who can see Engagement Analytics

Administrators can always see Engagement Analytics. Students and parents cannot. For teachers and advisors, choose one of these options:

  • Full Access: engagement for all students.
  • Class Members and Homeroom: only students in their classes and homeroom.
  • None: no access.

Set the default for all teachers in Settings > Security & Permissions > Teachers & Advisors > Default Permissions.

To change it for one person, use the Individual Permissions tab: find their row, choose an option under Engagement Analytics and select Save Changes. You can also open their profile and go to Edit Profile > Permissions.
