Note: TOK functionality will only be available if you have enabled it within your year group settings. Read more via Configuring & Enabling Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Worksheets
The below article refers to the new TOK 2022 requirements. For guidance on Legacy TOK on ManageBac (including the TOK Presentation), see here.
Navigating the TOK Worksheet
Via the Year Group > TOK Exhibition / TOK Essays
Note: If you don't see the TOK features in the Year Group, enable the TOK Worksheets via Year Group > Edit Year Group Settings. Make sure that you have selected the proper Year Group grade level. This will ensure that the correct prescribed titles are appearing. The screenshots below outline how to navigate to the Edit Year Group Settings page and how to enable different TOK templates there.
Via TOK Exhibition and TOK Essays in your IB Year Group, you can access the TOK rosters. Click on any student's name to access that student's TOK Worksheet.
In the student's Workspace, The TOK worksheet contains the TOK rubric, documents, deadlines and notes. Students can edit their TOK Essay Prescribed Title by clicking Edit Prescribed Title.
After selecting a TOK Prescribed title, entering an estimated number of words, and selecting a teacher, click Save Changes.
Accessing the Journal and Planning and Progress Form
Click the Journal tab to review student journal entries. The journal accepts text entries with a rich text editor enabled. Students can add entries by clicking on the Add Entries drop-down menu. Entries can be added as text, files, videos, website links, or images. Students can connect each entry to the relevant area of knowledge and key concepts. The individual file size limit is 500 MB per entry.
Click on the Planning and Progress Form tab to review students' first, second, and third interactions. Teachers can share their comments with students, and comments are immediately available for students to view. They can also lock the students' interactions after they have been made to prevent the student from making further changes. Clicking Save Changes will save any changes made.
Adding Deadlines and To-Dos
Via the Theory of Knowledge or Calendar tabs
You can create TOK deadlines by clicking Add Deadline under on the right-hand side of TOK roster. You can also add new deadlines from the Calendar tile in your year group.
- Enter basic details (name, date, & time)
- Link the deadline to TOK Essays. Note: It is not possible to link a deadline after it has been created, so it's importing to link at this time.
- Enable Dropbox to allow students to submit their documents through ManageBac.
- If you Enable TurnItIn, submitted coursework will be filtered through TurnItIn automatically.
- If you choose to Attach Files, they will be available when students access the deadline.
- You can tick Notify via E-mail to send students e-mails letting them know that a new deadline has been created.
- Once you have clicked Add Deadline, the deadline will appear on the calendar.
On the deadline's page, you will need to add at least one To-Do item to ensure the deadline will appear on the student worksheets. You can assign To-Dos to students, advisors, or everyone. If you assign a To-Do to students only, advisors will not be able to check them off (and vice-versa for students). To-Do items can also be reviewed and added via the students' Workspace.
You can also review the status of your students on the TOK rosters by clicking on TOK Exhibition or TOK Essays. The default view displays a list of the students assigned by their advisor with key information such as prescribed title, approximate words, and status (Needs Approval, Approved and Complete).
To view progress against a specific deadline, you can switch to the Deadlines view. This will allow you to see where each of your students stand relative to the global deadlines that have been set (e.g. submitting an outline, meeting with advisor, etc.). You can also switch to the Planning and Progress view to see how many interactions have been submitted.
Uploading TOK Documents
In the Notes section, you can leave messages for students to which they can reply. This is ideal for posting comments and scheduling meetings. You can also leave Interview Notes, which are visible to staff only by default.
