Configuring HL Essay Final Submission Deadlines

When first opening the IA tab and selecting Higher Level Essay (External Assessment) of any Group 1 class, teachers will see the configuration page to create the External Assessment Task submission deadline.

Set the appropriate due date and time for this Task and you may edit the title if you wish.

Levels should be set to HL. Assessment Options are pre-selected and cannot be changed. Assessment Type should not be changed, but can be changed if needed.

Assessment criteria are included for guidance only as this work is externally assessed by IB Examiners.

Scroll past the enabled Criteria rubrics to select when students can submit to this task as well as enable a possible Turnitin integration or set other additional options for the task.

Click Create Task to configure the HL Essay Submission task for the class.

Collecting Final Submissions for HL Essay Task

Once the Final Submission Task has been configured, the IA page of the class will show the Final Submission task and all students linked to the Class for the Task with Criteria enabled.

Teachers can then either view and annotate the student submission for each student, or generate a Teacher Comments and Criteria PDF per student next to the student's name. Assessment criteria are included for guidance only as this work is externally assessed by IB Examiners.

Teachers can also export all Teacher Comments and Criteria PDF in bulk for the Task from the right sidebar by clicking Export Teacher Files.

By default the Task Results for all IB tasks are hidden from student view.

Students can submit to the configured Final Submission task by selecting the Task from their Calendar or Tasks & Deadlines pages.

Grading HL Essay Task submissions (not required for this task)

Teachers have two ways to assess the student submission for the HL Essay Tasks. They can either enter Criteria marks and Comments in the Gradebook section of the Task via the IA page. Or they can open the Annotate and Grade view of the submission and then grade the submission that way. Assessment criteria are included for guidance only as this work is externally assessed by IB Examiners.

Organising HL Essay Task Submissions for eCoursework

Since the Final Submission configured via the HL essay page is technically a Task in the class, teachers are able to interact with this via the Tasks & Units > All Tasks page as well and treat submissions made to the Task like any other Task submissions. This allows teachers direct access to the student submissions, downloading those in bulk as zip folder, locking submissions or extending the due dates for individual students or in bulk.

All student submissions to HL Essay Tasks in Classes are automatically categorised as IB eCoursework submission files in the Student Portfolio Timeline

The eCoursework (Staff only) folder is available for all IB DP Students and populates subjects and coursework components based on the Subject selections made in the IBIS Plan Worksheet (see our IBIS Exam Registration Quickstart Guide for more information on the Plan Worksheet)

Files that have been submitted in the Task can then be categorised as the Upload Requirements for each subject require.

Creating additional IB Tasks besides the Final Submission Task

In addition to the Final Submission Task, teachers can also create any regular Task in their Classes and use the IB Assessment criteria as one of the selected assessment models. If the Task is expected to count toward the Term average in the class, then the teacher would need to include Points as an assessment model as well.

Creating additional IB tasks with fewer or not all Criteria assessed can help students prepare for the final IB submission toward the end of the course.
