In a DP Group 1 class, open IA > Higher Level Essay (External assessment), set the due date and submission options, then select Create Task. Students submit to the task, and you collect, annotate and export the essays from the task's Dropbox and eCoursework Submission section.

Managing Group 1 HL Essays

Set up the HL Essay final submission task

Open your DP Group 1 class and select IA, then Higher Level Essay (External assessment). The menu also has Learner Portfolio and Orals.
The first time you open it, the task form appears. The title is filled in for you. Set the Due Date & Time and check the Type.
Under Assessment Options, Comments and IB Assessment are selected, with criteria A to D (Knowledge, understanding and interpretation; Analysis and evaluation; Focus, organization and development; Language). The criteria are for guidance only, as IB examiners mark the essay.
Under Submission Type, keep Coursework Submissions on. You can also Set Submission Opening Date and, if your school uses Turnitin, tick Turnitin Feedback Studio.
Under Additional Options, choose Notify via E-mail or Save as Draft if you need to, then select Create Task.
Grades and comments on IB final submission tasks are hidden from students by default, and you cannot share annotations on these tasks. If you want students to submit a draft for feedback, create a separate practice task (see below).
Collect and download essays
Once the task exists, IA > Higher Level Essay (External assessment) opens the task page. Students submit from the task in their Tasks & Deadlines or Calendar, like any other task.
In Dropbox and eCoursework Submission you can see each student's status, files, annotation and Turnitin result, and:
- select Prepare all files as ZIP to download every essay;
- select Lock All Submissions to stop further uploads;
- select Extend Due Date to give individual students more time.
The task also appears under the class Tasks tab, so you can manage it there like any other task.
Annotate or assess essays (optional)
Marking is not required, as the essay is externally assessed. If you want to record your own judgement:
- select the icon in the Annotation column to open the essay in the split-screen view and annotate it alongside the criteria; or
- select Open in Gradebook on the task to enter criteria marks and comments for each student.

Prepare essays for IB eCoursework
Essays submitted to the HL Essay task are saved as IB eCoursework files in each student's portfolio. Open a student's profile, go to Portfolio and select eCoursework Portfolio. Subjects and components come from the subjects on the student's IBIS Plan Worksheet. Track progress across the year group in the eCoursework Dashboard.

Set practice essays with IB criteria
To help students prepare, create a regular task from the class Tasks tab and choose IB Assessment as an assessment option. You can select only some of the criteria. If the task should count towards the term grade, add Points as well. Unlike the final submission, you can share grades, comments and annotations on these tasks.
