Managing the Extended Essay (EE) Worksheet

Learn how to navigate the Extended Essay Worksheet, set deadlines and To-Dos, upload documents, and record notes and interviews in ManageBac+.

The Extended Essay (EE) Worksheet allows DP Coordinators, EE Coordinators, and Supervisors to manage every stage of a student's Extended Essay, from topic proposal through to final submission of the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF).

This guide walks through navigating the EE Worksheet, setting deadlines and To-Dos, uploading reference documents, and recording notes and interviews.

Note: EE functionality is only available if it has been enabled in your year group settings. See Configuring & Enabling Extended Essay Worksheets for details.

Step by Step Navigation

  1. Go to Extended Essay > Proposals in the relevant DP year group to access the EE roster.
  2. Click on a student's name to open that student's EE Worksheet. The worksheet contains a portfolio of EE documents, deadlines, and notes.

  • Enable Coursework Submissions to allow students to submit their documents through ManageBac+.

At least one To-Do item must be added to ensure the deadline appears on the student worksheet. To-Dos can be assigned to students, advisors, or everyone. If a To-Do is assigned to students only, advisors cannot check it off, and vice versa.

Deadlines appear on the student's EE Worksheet, and To-Do items can also be reviewed and added via the Worksheets tab.

The status of all students can also be reviewed from the EE tab. The default view lists students by advisor, showing key information such as Subject, Topic, Research Question, and Status (Needs Approval, Approved, Complete). Switching to the Deadlines view shows progress against each global deadline, such as submitting an outline or meeting with an advisor.

Uploading EE Documents

  1. Reference documents can be uploaded under the Extended Essay Documents section of the Worksheet.
  2. If the account is integrated with Google Drive, documents can be uploaded directly from a Google Drive account.

Adding Notes & Interviews Via the Extended Essay Worksheet

The Notes & Interviews section allows messages to be left for students, who can then reply. This is ideal for posting comments and scheduling meetings. Interview notes can also be added and are visible to staff only by default.

  1. After selecting the relevant advisory student, scroll to the bottom of the Extended Essay Worksheet to record an interview note.
  2. Tick the Interview Note checkbox to save the note with an Interview tag.

Interview notes record progress on a given date and are only visible to faculty, including the Extended Essay Coordinator and the EE Supervisor. This setting can be changed so interview notes are visible to students.

Making Interview Notes Visible to Students

To make Interview Notes visible to students, an administrator must enable the setting via Settings > Security & Permissions, then check Browse Interview Notes.

Warnings & Important Notes

  • The Extended Essay tab must be enabled under Edit Year Group Settings before it becomes visible.
  • A deadline cannot be linked to the Extended Essay after it has been created, so it must be linked at the time of creation.
  • At least one To-Do item must be added to a deadline, or it will not appear on the student EE Worksheet.
  • Interview notes are visible to faculty only by default and must be enabled by an administrator to be shared with students.

In Summary

  • The EE Worksheet centralises proposals, journals, assessment, and the PPF for each student.
  • Deadlines must be linked to the Extended Essay at creation and include at least one To-Do item to display correctly.
  • Notes and interviews support ongoing communication between supervisors and students throughout the EE process.

Using these tools together in ManageBac+ gives Coordinators and Supervisors a clear, structured view of every student's Extended Essay progress.
