Set up the list of works

On the List of Works tab, add each work with its Author, Literary Form and Work Type. Students and teachers choose from this list when they enter extracts. You can also manage the list from the Learner Portfolio.

The work types depend on the course level set for the class: Work and Body of Work for Language and Literature, and Work in the Language A Studied and Work in Translation for Literature. Check that the class has the right course level before you start.

Record the oral

  1. On the student's oral page, allow your browser to use the microphone.

  2. Select Record to start, and stop when the oral ends. The recording stops on its own at the maximum time.

  3. Select Save to store the recording. Save Changes at the bottom of the page does not save the recording.

Once saved, the page shows when it was recorded, with a player and Download MP3 Recording. If you recorded elsewhere, you can upload an MP3 or M4A file instead.

💡 Recording tips
  • Use the latest Google Chrome or Firefox.
  • If the oral happens online, use one device for the meeting and another to record in ManageBac+ if you can. Google Meet and Zoom work alongside recording; test other tools first.
  • Do not use headphones, so the microphone can pick up the student through your speakers.
  • You can also record the online meeting and upload the MP3 or M4A file.

Enter extracts, the Global Issue and notes

In Extracts, choose the work used and add the extract for each part of the oral. Use plain text or images of text only, because IB examiners cannot open files or links in forms submitted to IBIS.

In Student Outline, enter the Global Issue and the Notes for the Oral (up to 10 bullet points). Students can fill these in from their own Orals tab, and teachers see them on the student's oral page.

Lock and unlock student outlines

On the roster, select Lock All Students Outlines to stop students editing. On a student's oral page, use Lock Student Outline to lock or unlock it for one student, for example during their preparation time.

Assess the oral

Save the recording first. Then, under Assessment, choose a level for each criterion and add Comments, and select Save Changes. You can leave the assessment blank and come back to it later from the roster.

Export IB forms and submit

When the oral is recorded, assessed and the extracts are complete, open the Details panel on the student's oral page. Select Export Extracts, Export 1/LALIO Form (or the Literature form), Export Criteria and Teacher Comments or Export Student Outline Form. Exported forms are saved to the eCoursework folder of the student's portfolio, and are included when an admin generates IB forms.

Once the IB has chosen the candidates for moderation, download the MP3 recordings and upload them to IBIS, or drag them from the student portfolio into eCoursework. See Uploading to IB eCoursework from ManageBac+.

Learner Portfolio in Group 1 classes

The learner portfolio is not assessed, but students use it to explore their works in relation to global issues and to prepare for the oral. Open it from IA > Learner Portfolio. See Managing the Learner Portfolio.

Global Politics HL: extension orals

Global Politics classes have an Extension Oral tab with a roster of students.

  • Students enter their case study title, a short summary and their bibliography in their class, on the Extension Oral tab.
  • Select a student on the roster. Under each case study, select Choose file to upload the recording (a video under 500 MB), then select Save Changes.
  • Lock case study 1 or 2 for the whole class from the roster, or lock and unlock them for one student from their oral page.
  • When the oral and case study details are complete, select Export CSGP Form in the Details panel. The 3/CSGP/HX form is saved to the eCoursework (Staff only) folder in the student's portfolio, and is included when an admin selects Generate IB Forms.
