Work out why a term average is higher or lower than you expected

Term averages in the Gradebook are calculated from the assessed tasks in the term. Most unexpected results come from category weights, the calculation method or tasks that fall outside the term.

Check these in order

  1. Check the task datesOnly tasks within the academic term count towards that term's average. A task dated in the wrong term will not be included.
  2. Check each task's categoryGo to Gradebook > Tasks > Display Task Category Averages. A task in the wrong category changes how much it counts.
  3. Check the category weightsCategory weights are set per class. Make sure they add up the way you intend and select Save Changes after any edit.
  4. Check the calculation methodYour school chooses one of three methods for all classes (not IB MYP or PYP). Ask your coordinator which one is in use.
  5. Check the grade scaleThe term grade scale converts the average into a grade. Open Term Grades > Display Term Grade Scale to see the boundaries for your class.

How the three methods differ

Method What it means for you
Percentage weights Each category has a percentage. Every task in a category counts equally, whatever its points.
Percentage weights with points-based averaging Tasks worth more points count for more within their category.
Absolute weights The weight applies to each task, so a category with more tasks has more influence on the final grade.
Use Percentage Weights with Points-based Averaging: percentage points pie
💡 Tip

If two classes with similar marks show different averages, compare their task categories and grade scales first. These are set class by class.

Checked all of these and the grade still looks wrong?
