What online lessons do
Online lessons sit in your unit's Stream and on the class calendar, so teachers, students and parents see lesson times and links alongside tasks. You can use Zoom, which creates the meeting link for you, or any other meeting tool. Chat, questions, recordings and student feedback stay with the lesson, so students who were absent can catch up and your school keeps a record of each lesson.
Schedule an online lesson
-
Go to Class > Tasks & Units, select the unit and open Stream & Resources.
-
Select Online Lesson at the top of the page.
Enter the lesson title, start time and end time (all required), and any details students need to join.
-
Choose the Online Lesson Location:
- Zoom Meeting: the link is generated automatically. The first time, select Click Here to link your Zoom account. ManageBac+ remembers it after that.
- Other Online meeting: paste the link to your meeting room.
Choose whether to notify the class by email, then save.
The lesson shows in the unit Stream, on teachers' and students' calendars and in the Dashboard activity list. You can also add a lesson from Class > Calendar with Add New Online Lesson.
To use Zoom, you need a Zoom account and must be signed in to Zoom in your browser or have the Zoom desktop app installed.
Start or join a lesson
-
Select the green Start icon on the lesson in Stream & Resources, or open it from the Calendar.
Choose whether to Enable Student Chat, Enable Student Notes and Enable Questions.
Select Confirm & Start to start the lesson and open Presentation Mode. From the Calendar, select Open instead to view Presentation Mode without starting the lesson.
Start a lesson only at its real start time. Once you end a started lesson, it switches to Browse Completed Lesson mode and nothing more can be added.
Students and teachers can also join from the link on the calendar.
Present and chat during the lesson
Presentation Mode shows a unit's lessons and resources full screen. Use it with Zoom online lessons, share your screen in another meeting tool, or present in class on a smart board or projector. You can preview documents (including Word and PowerPoint), videos, images and assessment tasks.
-
Left column: Stream & Resources, with the unit details and resources. Select the
icon to collapse it and widen the centre.
- Centre: the resource you are presenting.
- Right column: Chat, Members or Questions (if enabled, for public or private student questions).
- Students can take personal notes while you present.
Select Join Video Call at the bottom of the screen to open the meeting. It only shows if the lesson has a meeting link.
-
When the lesson is over, select End Online Lesson. Selecting Close Presentation Mode at the top right also ends the meeting for everyone.
If you recorded the meeting, add the recording link to the lesson. The file stays in your meeting tool's cloud storage, and students open it from ManageBac+.
How chat works
Teachers and students can discuss, ask questions and react with emojis. All chat is saved in the online lesson transcript. Profanity filters and muting keep discussions safe. Students can also give quick lesson feedback with emojis (for example "I understand" or "Confused") so you can see how the class is doing.
Add Zoom to a calendar event
Go to Calendar and select Add Event.
Select Create Zoom Meeting. If the event is for certain students, only they can join.
-
To use another meeting room, paste its URL in the location field. A Start or Join button then shows on the event.
For Zoom events, cloud recordings appear in ManageBac+ automatically once Zoom has processed them, which can take up to an hour. Use Download Recording or Play Recording. The buttons work for as long as the recording is in Zoom Cloud.
