Creating MYP Unit Plans

Via the Tasks & Units tab in your class

Under the Classes tab, select the class in question. Next, select the Tasks & Units tab. To add a new unit, click Add Unit on the right. If you wish to edit an already existing unit, click the 'Unit Name'.

Class > Tasks & Units > Add Unit

Create a title for your unit, select the start date, the duration of the unit in weeks, and then click Create Unit. This will create the unit. You can begin adding details on the sections below.

Edit Unit Plan

Once you have clicked on the Unit Name, click Edit Unit to edit the unit.

Unit planning is completed in the ManageBac unit planning wizard, comprising eight steps:

1. Summary

2. Inquiry

3. Stream & Resources

4. Curriculum

5. Assessment

6. Learning Experiences

7. Connections

8. Reflections

1. Summary

On the Summary tab, you can edit the title, subject, and duration. You can choose to share the unit between grades, save it as a draft, or archive the unit. You can also choose to make the unit an Interdisciplinary Unit, which allows you to share it with other subjects.

Please note that the original unit subject is always set to the subject of the class it was created in.

Please also note that you cannot remove a unit's grade level if you are editing from within a class of that particular grade level. If your unit is shared with multiple grades, go to a class of a different grade level to edit the unit and remove the undesired grade.

Click Save and Next to move to the next section.

2. Inquiry

All 16 Key Concepts are available for use in all unit plans. Key Concepts that appear in bold are the concepts recommended for the subject.

1) Further down on the Inquiry tab, you can select Related Concepts which have been built in for each MYP subject.

2) You can also type in Other Related Concepts for this unit if a certain concept is not available for that subject.

3) Conceptual Understandings can be added in a text field here.

4) Select one of the provided Global Context or choose "Other."

5) Enter the Statement of Inquiry for this unit.

6) Add Inquiry Questions by selecting the Add Line of Inquiry button and entering an inquiry question along with the question type, i.e. Factual, Conceptual, or Debatable. You can also enter an optional Line of Inquiry.

Click Save and Next to save changes and navigate to the next section.

3. Stream & Resources

Under Stream & Resources, you can add Assignments, websites, files, videos, and other data to complement your teaching and to support your assessment tasks.

Use the stream by dragging and dropping to organise resources and assessment tasks from a Unit planner in a sequence for your students. This creates a step-by-step numbered list for students & teachers to follow. (Note that all resources in the stream will be shared with students). Click the 'arrow down' icon to remove an item from the stream.

4. Curriculum

The Curriculum tab shows 3 sub-tabs for relevant curriculum information for MYP Unit Plans.

On the MYP Objectives tab, you can select from built in items from the IB according to the subject guide for the subject of the class.

After selecting MYP Objectives, click Save and Next to continue.

On the Standards/skills tab, you can select from local standards/skills added to your account. Click Save and Next when finished.

This page will be blank if Standards have not been added to your account.

Please contact the ManageBac support team at if you would like us to help add your school's standards to your account so they can be selected in unit planners.

You can add additional content and skills information in the Content & Skills tab.

Click Save and Next when finished.

5. Assessment

On the Assessment tab, you can add tasks to the unit by clicking the Add New Task button, and describe how you will use Assessment within with text boxes. Tasks will be arranged in Tabs by Summative and Formative, and Teachers can see Tasks in their class or Across all Sections.

Select which Assessment Criteria will be used for this unit.

Click Save and Next to save changes and navigate to the Learning Experiences tab.

6. Learning Experiences

On the Learning Experiences tab, you can speak to the Learning Experiences, Teaching Strategies, the Learning Process, Activities and Differentiation. Click Save & Next at the bottom of the page to progress to the Connections tab.

7. Connections

On the Connections tab, select and add ATLs and add coverage details and notes as well as how the Learner Profile will be addressed through this unit. Furthermore, you can speak to opportunities for Service Learning. Click Save and Next when complete.

6. Reflections

Under Reflections, you can reflect on the success of the unit Prior, During, and After the unit. This tab is organized by academic year, so your historical reflections and evaluation comments will be automatically saved for future academic years.

Click Save Changes and Next to save your work and return to the unit overview. Click Generate PDF Planner to export the unit plan to the MYP Unit Planner template.

Unit Plans can be pinned using our virtual highlighter tool. It highlights the Unit Plan on the page, so that teachers can easily find the areas that are most important to them when reading the Unit Plan in ManageBac.
