Creating a Unit of Inquiry

Via Homeroom Class

Via the Inquiry tab, select a grade level and a Homeroom class on the left navigation panel. This page will display the Current Unit followed by the Programme of Inquiry. On the right navigation panel, click Add Unit.

Adding a new unit will prompt you to input a Title, select the start month and week, and duration of the unit (in weeks), and indicate the subject/s of focus. Click Save Changes to create the Unit of Inquiry.

Note: To edit an existing unit, click on the unit and then Edit Unit Plan.

Purpose and Inquiry - Summary

The Summary tab allows you to further define an Age group, share with other grade levels, Save as Draft (marked with 'draft' icon on the Whole-School Curriculum), and Archive (hidden from the Whole-School Curriculum).

Tick the Stand-alone unit box to exclude the unit from the Programme of Inquiry.

Click Save and Next to save changes and navigate to the next section of the planner.

Purpose and Inquiry - Scope and Sequence

Via the Scope and Sequence tab, indicate the Overall Expectations, Conceptual Understandings, and Learning Outcomes that you plan to address.

Note: New ManageBac accounts by default build IB Scope and Sequence by Phases. Social Studies and Science will display an Age Range field. The screenshot example above has Scope and Sequence as Years-based.

Purpose and Inquiry - Inquiry

Via the Inquiry tab, select the Transdisciplinary theme, specify the focus points, and the Central Idea.

Note: If a Transdisciplinary theme is never saved, the system will store the unit under Stand-alone Units, and it will not appear in the Programme of Inquiry.

Purpose and Inquiry - Summative Assessment

Via the Summative Assessment tab, you can add the summative assessment tasks planned, and describe how students will be assessed within the Unit of Inquiry.

Please note: Formative assessments must select lines of inquiry when created, or they will not appear on any PDF exports of the unit plan. Therefore, we recommend adding formative assessments via the Assessment tab later on.

Concepts and Questions  

Via the Concepts and Questions tab, select the key concepts and explain how they will be incorporated within the subjects and related concepts. Add a new concept by selecting from the Add Concept dropdown, then Add.

Further down the page are sections to define the Lines of Inquiry together with related Teacher Questions, and detail Provocations


Via Assessment, you can add formative assessment tasks and describe how they will be linked back to the specific Lines of Inquiry.

Learning Experiences

Via the Learning Experiences tab, describe the best ways of learning and how the unit will incorporate aspects of the Learner Profile, Attitudes and Transdisciplinary Skills.


Under Resources, you can add journal entries, websites, files, videos, and other data to complement your teaching and to support your assessment tasks.  

Use the Stream view by dragging and dropping to organise resources and assessment tasks from a Unit planner in a sequence for your students. This creates a step-by-step numbered list for students & teachers to follow. Click here to learn more about Stream View.

Tick the Share with Students checkbox to share any additional resources with students. These will be shared with students' when they access unit plans and can also be linked to assignments that are tied to the unit plan. Click here for more information on sharing unit resources with students.

Reflection and Evaluation

Via the Reflections and Evaluation tab, evaluate the Unit’s success in addressing the stated purpose, elements of PYP, and student-initiated inquiry. This section is refreshed for each new academic year. Data from past academic years is accessible via the Academic Year dropdown.
